St. Augustine is often attributed to claiming that singing is praying twice. Here at St. Helen, we offer many opportunities with varying levels of commitment to enable you to share your love of music with God and our community. There are a number of possibilities depending on your abilities, time availability, and Mass preference.

Laudate Choir

If you like to sing in 4-part harmony, this group is for you. Members are 14 years are older, and this choir sings regularly at the 9:00am mass on Sundays, as well as the midnight Christmas Eve Vigil Mass, and for the services of the Triduum. Rehearsals are normally Wednesday evening from 7:00-8:30pm. An initial audition is typically recommended for voice placement.

Handbell Ensemble

If you love music but singing isn't your specialty, this is a great way to get involved. The requirements are only a willingness to learn, dedication to attend rehearsals and learn the music, and the desire to work closely with people dedicated to this ministry. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00pm. The handbell ensemble usually plays about once per month.

Bereavement Choir

This choir is an important ministry in our parish. Singing during funerals is a loving support to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The group meets 30 to 45 minutes before the start of a funeral. Funerals typically start at 11:00am.

Cantors

Cantors are specially trained singers who lead the psalm and other songs during Mass. This ministry requires special training and an audition.

Instrumentalists

Instrumentalists including guitars, bass, flute, trumpet, other wind instruments, strings, and percussion are regularly needed to enhance and assist during our liturgies. At least a high-school level competency is normally required and an advanced meeting with the music director should be scheduled. Time commitment varies depending on the needs of the music program.
